Do We or Don’t We?
In searching for things to do in Nashville, I came across the Doyle and Debbie Show. This is the description on the show’s website:
The Doyle and Debbie Show is sublime parody, simultaneously lampooning and idolizing country music’s tradition of iconic duos and their subsequent battle of the sexes. Bruce Arntson and Jenny Littleton wield the vocals of vintage country stars and the acting chops of Broadway veterans, taking audiences on a freewheeling joyride through a wickedly funny script and slew of equally hilarious original songs. Over the past three years, Doyle and Debbie have developed a rabid cult following in Nashville, many of whom have seen the show over a dozen times—everyone from theater-going professionals to college students who wouldn’t be caught dead in a theater or a country bar.
Tim and I like music, and we like comedy. This show sounds like a perfect combination. After reading some of the reviews on Trip Advisor, I’m not so sure. Most of the reviewers went one of two ways: They thought it was hysterically funny, or they thought it was blatantly offensive. One reviewer commented that it perpetuated the idea that people in the South are a “bunch of uneducated, misogynist, hate mongers.” Another reviewer thought their song “Barefoot and Pregnant” would be offensive to feminists and “I Ain’t No Homo” was tasteless and rude.
Other reviewers thought these were among the things that make the show funny. One reviewer noted that anyone who loves country music will love the show, and anyone who hates country music will love the show.
If you go to the website of the Doyle and Debbie Show, you can listen to some of their songs. They are meant to poke fun at country music and country music artists. I can see where it might be offensive to some, but maybe the key word in poking fun is FUN. Maybe it’s just a matter of whether you choose to laugh or choose to be offended.
One thing all of the reviewers agreed on is that the content isn’t suitable for kids.

Hi, Debbie! I just went to listen to the songs and found them hilarious! It may be because I grew up during the era of George and Tammy; Loretta Lynn and others of that time. Doyle’s outfit reminds me of Porter Wagner. I find these songs not too different from theirs of cheatin’ husbands and unfaithful wives, etc. People these days are just too sensitive to the realities of life…people still cheat; still have unrequited love; still sneak around. Not a preferable thing to do, of course, but still true. The greater population is now composed of people with more refined sensabilities, but still the same proclivities toward drinking (just read the news and watch it on TV) and cheating – look at the politicians caught in the act. Ah, well, I enjoyed them and would certainly enjoy the show. I would wager that the same people who think the show abominable would attend a smutty comedian’s show and laugh at it. I prefer the country music myself. OOPS! I did run on, didn’t I? Ha.
Ha! That’s okay, my brother’s comments are usually longer than my posts, so I’m used to it! And I love getting comments, no matter how long they are.
I agree with you about the people who find the show abominable attending a smutty comedian show. I think there are a lot of people that just need something to complain about. 🙂
